Mandau AR-89

The Mandau AR-89 is a next-generation assault rifle developed and manufactured by Mandau Arms, a high-tech weapons contractor based in the Federation of Independent Systems (FIS) and Trikora. Introduced in the merchants' war and The Great Calamity, the AR-89 serves as the standard-issue service rifle for front-line infantry units and special forces of the FIS Armed Forces. Its defining characteristic is its use of 4.77×35mm caseless ammunition, offering advantages in weight, logistics, and operational stealth compared to conventional cased rounds.

Design and Development

Development of the Mandau AR-89 was initiated under the militarization of the Federation program, aimed at producing a modular, lightweight infantry rifle optimized for future battlefield environments. By using previous rifle designs such as Mandau’s AR-30 Rifle, which was widely used in human space, the goal of this new rifle is to improve the lack of standardization issue of parts and the quality of the firearm itself. The AR-89’s design philosophy emphasizes reliability in diverse climates, minimal thermal signature, and seamless integration with soldier-borne electronics.

Though it draws aesthetic inspiration from conventional rifles, its internal mechanics and material composition reflect a radical departure, owing largely to its caseless ammunition and use of advanced composite polymers.

The weapon was adopted officially in the early years of the formation of the Federation following a successful two-year trial period with FIS Marines Corps.

Ammunition

The proprietary 4.77×35mm caseless cartridge used in the AR-89 eliminates the need for a metal casing by encasing a solid propellant block around a high-velocity saboted projectile. This innovation reduces overall ammunition weight by 35% and eliminates ejection mechanics, simplifying the rifle’s operation and enhancing reliability.

Caseless rounds also exhibit lower infrared signatures and reduced sound profiles, especially when used with a suppressor, making the AR-89 well-suited for reconnaissance and stealth missions.

Operational History

The Mandau AR-89 has been widely deployed across FIS territories and conflict zones, notably during the Merchants War and the Great Calamity. Its performance in harsh desert, arctic, and urban environments has made it a preferred choice among FIS forces and elite contractors.

Critics from rival blocs have questioned the long-term viability of caseless ammunition in extended campaigns, but field reports indicate that the AR-89 has outperformed legacy systems in both reliability and combat effectiveness. In doing so the Mandau AR-89 has become one of the most popular firearms in the galaxy. The rifle has become favored by Xalgorian Peacekeepers to Criminal Organisations in the galaxy.
